A Nature Lover’s Dream

This section of river consists of the pond behind Holtwood Dam, known as Lake Aldred. Here the river passes through the heart of the Susquehanna Piedmont Gorge. The gorge is highly scenic, with a diversity of rare plant and animal species and outstanding geological formations. The most extensive publicly accessible open space system within the water trail corridor can be found here, ranging from well-manicured areas such as the Muddy Run and Safe Harbor parks to natural areas like Tucquan Glen Nature Preserve and Shenk’s Ferry Wildflower Preserve.
